Accounting Major
Accounting majors prepare for a dynamic career in business. The Heidelberg program meets all of the recommendations of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants for a bachelor's degree specializing in accountancy.
Emphasis is placed on both financial accounting and on the aspects of management necessary for a successful career in corporate accounting. Accounting majors are encouraged to broaden their studies and gain a second major in an area of liberal arts or sciences. A special interest would be a dual major in computer information systems.
The accounting major complies with the recommendations of the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants for the initial 120 hours. Those who complete the accounting major, and an additional 30 semester hours, are qualified to take the Ohio CPA exam.
Curriculum
Accounting majors prepare for a dynamic career in business. The Heidelberg program meets all of the recommendations of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants for a bachelor's degree specializing in accountancy.
Accounting majors will focus on aspects of financial and managerial accounting; intermediate and advanced accounting; federal income tax and auditing; and a senior seminar. The senior seminar is a capstone experience that affords graduating seniors an opportunity to utilize knowledge and skills gained from previous course work in an independent project. Please refer to the course catalog for specific requirements and details.
Opportunities
Internships provide interesting "hands on" experience to juniors and seniors with a GPA of 2.5 or above. A broad range of internships provide Accounting majors opportunities to experience working in area CPA firms, in local government or other companies and organizations. The academic program is supplemented by an active Business and Economics Club with plant visits and campus speakers. A business honorary is open to those who have completed 20 hours in the department and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
