Alumna Profile

Whitney Harkom, ‘06

Whitney graduated from Heidelberg in May 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting and Business Administration. She shared the following about her experiences at Heidelberg:

During my four-year tenure at the Berg, I met so many people and experienced so much, all of which made me into a better person. Those memories are priceless to me, and will continue to be for the rest of my life.

I wouldn’t be where I am today without the education I received while at Heidelberg. The small classroom environment in all classes, including general education requirements, provided immeasurable benefits.  Heidelberg has an atmosphere that encourages creative thinking, supports discussion among peers and provides countless opportunities. Learning continued outside of the classroom, as well. Through internships, administrative committees and extracurricular clubs and councils, I learned the valuable skills of teamwork, problem-solving and time management.  These abilities have continued to help me in my professional, as well as personal, life.

After I graduated from Heidelberg in May 2006, I continued my education at Bowling Green State University in their Master of Accountancy program. When classes began, I was nervous that my classmates, of whom the majority had attended large, state schools with much bigger accounting programs, would have an advantage over me. That anxiety was quickly suppressed; I was just as, if not more, prepared and educated than the rest of my classmates. Grad school was challenging in many ways, but without the education I received at Heidelberg, both in and out of the classroom, I am certain I would not have done nearly as well as I did.

I graduated in August 2007 from BGSU and started as a Staff Accountant at Ernst & Young in Akron, Ohio. I love what I do for a living and credit my passion to my accounting and business professors at Heidelberg. I often hear colleagues talking about the regrets they now have about their college choices; I am proud to say I have no regrets with mine. Besides the education and technical talents I acquired, I made numerous lasting friendships with other students, as well as professors and administrators. I will always look back at my time at Heidelberg with a smile and know that it’s my “Sweet Alma Home.”
