Economics Major
Economics is one of the most useful and versatile disciplines that can be studied in college. Its purpose is to promote society's welfare through better use of our resources, whether these are human resources or natural resources. Economics training is highly valued in business and government. Studying economics is especially stimulating because of the unique combination of knowledge and skills required. Economists study math, statistics, history, philosophy, law and political science. Economists use their skills to provide answers to many problems faced by business and government.
The Economics major includes classes that give students a strong foundation in economic theory, plus the students' choices of specialized field courses. The program is a social science curriculum with a heavy emphasis on business applications. Students are encouraged to gain a strong background in mathematics and computer applications, and also to familiarize themselves with fundamental business courses. The Economics program offers excellent preparation for graduate school, law school or for entry-level positions in government and business. Students who anticipate graduate work in Economics are strongly advised to obtain a second major in Mathematics.
Curriculum
Candidates for either the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree must satisfy the general education requirements of the degree. These courses are designed to provide a broad liberal arts background and skills specific to the particular degree program.
The foundation of the Economics major is a core of four theory courses. This core is then supplemented by the students' selection of applied courses in such areas as: law and economics, urban and regional economics, economic development, international economics, labor economics and environmental and natural resource economics. The major is completed with the senior seminar, a capstone experience which allows the student to complete a detailed investigation of a significant economic issue. Please refer to the course catalog for specific requirements and details.
Opportunities
Internships provide interesting "hands-on" experience to juniors and seniors with a GPA of 2.5 or above. The academic program is supplemented by an active Heidelberg Business Club with plant visits and campus speakers. A business honorary is open to those who have completed 20 hours in the department and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
