History Major
History is a record of human achievements, downfalls, joys, customs and ways of thinking that, in total, have affected the lives of others. Students taking history courses can learn much from the experiences of the past and present, which enable them to have a greater understanding of how events and people influence the lives of human beings.
Heidelberg offers a wide selection of courses from ancient, medieval and modern history and from the history of the United States, China, Japan, the Middle East, Latin America and Europe. The experiences offered include internships, independent studies and participation in the Model Arab League.
Heidelberg is Dr. Bonnie Fors. Her World Civilization, Latin American and European history courses, as well as Human Geography, give a broad background in diverse areas of the human experience. her area of research interest is Guatemala and its Maya heritage.
Dr. David Hogan is also Heidelberg. His strongest interest is modern American social history, and he offers courses in the history of women, African-American, and education as well as period courses. Dr. Hogan is a well known scholar of the American fast-food industry and has published a history of White Castle.
History classes are small. Classes for majors normally contain about 15 students. Personal attention and interaction with professors is a daily occurrence. Heidelberg is a member of the international history honorary, Phi Alpha theta, which provides extracurricular opportunities for fellowship and scholarship.
Graduate programs in history, museum studies, library science and the law are plentiful for history majors. Heidelberg graduates are very successful in graduate school and law school.
