History Major

History is a record of human achievements, downfalls, joys, customs and ways of thinking that, in total, have affected the lives of others. Students taking history courses can learn much from the experiences of the past and present, which enable them to have a greater understanding of how events and people influence the lives of human beings.

History at Heidelberg

Courses and Opportunities
Heidelberg offers a wide selection of courses from ancient, medieval and modern history and from the history of the United States, China, Japan, the Middle East, Latin America and Europe. The experiences offered include internships, independent studies and participation in the Model Arab League.

History classes are small. Classes for majors normally contain about 15 students. Personal attention and interaction with professors is a daily occurrence. Heidelberg is a member of the international history honorary, Phi Alpha Theta, which provides extracurricular opportunities for fellowship and scholarship.

Graduate programs in history, museum studies, library science and the law are plentiful for history majors. Heidelberg graduates are very successful in graduate school and law school.

Faculty

Dr. Bonnie Fors's  World Civilization, Latin American and European history courses, as well as Human Geography, give a broad background in diverse areas of the human experience.  Her area of research is Guatemala and its Maya heritage.

Dr. David Hogan's strongest interest is in modern American social history, and he offers courses in women's, African-American and education history, as well as period courses. Dr. Hogan is a well-known scholar of the American fast-food industry and has published a history of White Castle.

Dr. Courtney DeMayo is the newest addition to the history department. She teaches courses on the history of Europe and the history of Asia. Her area of interest in Europe in the Early and High Middle Ages.
