Frequently Asked Questions

Why major in Spanish?

Spanish is spoken by about 400 million people in 21 countries around the world. The study of Spanish opens doors not only for international business, service, teaching and travel, it also promotes cross-cultural understanding within the United States. This country has the fifth largest Spanish-speaking population in the world, after Mexico, Spain, Argentina and Colombia. No matter what career you choose, you are highly likely to have the opportunity to interact with Spanish speakers.

Why study Spanish at Heidelberg?

A unique feature of the Spanish program at Heidelberg is that all of our students spend a semester abroad, living with a host family and studying in a Spanish-speaking country. We believe that a total immersion experience abroad is the best way not only to become fluent in the language, but also to feel completely "at home" in the host culture.

During your semester abroad, you will have the opportunity to live the cultural experiences that many students only read about in their textbooks. At a cost that is comparable to spending a semester on our home campus in Ohio, this study abroad experience is a cornerstone of the 'Berg Spanish major.

Is Heidelberg right for me?

From its first graduating class of five students in 1854 to its current enrollment of over 1,600 students in all programs, Heidelberg has always emphasized the individual student as a person of value and potential. Our Mission Statement makes clear what we seek for you:

"...a life of purpose with distinction."

If this sounds like your destination, the 'Berg can get you there.

Sometimes smaller is better. Because our student-facility ratio is about 13:1, you will receive more individualized attention in the classroom. It's not unusual for you to get to know your professors-and for them to get to know you-through your involvement in extracurricular activities that they may advise. At Heidelberg, you will discover a sense of family and of finding your place. Smaller is better, yes, but that doesn't limit the potential of Heidelberg students. We offer the academic education to serve as a strong foundation for achieving your dreams and a full palette of collegiate experiences-men's and women's sports, theater, music... a full and active campus life.
