Spanish Minor

The Spanish Section of the Languages Department offers minors in Spanish and Latin American Studies.
 

Spanish Minor

The Spanish minor complements a number of majors, including Business Administration, Education, International Studies and Public Relations.

Spanish minors must take 15 semester hours in Spanish (SPA) courses above SPA 102 – Elementary Spanish. It is also recommended that Spanish minors spend at least one semester or a summer studying abroad at an approved site in Spain or Latin America.
 

Latin American Studies Minor

The Latin American Studies minor complements a number of majors, including Anthropology, History, International Studies and Political Science
 
Latin American Studies minors must take 15 semesters of coursework, including:
POL 250 – Latin American Politics
NDI 340 – Women’s Voices in Latin America
one 300-level SPA course (prerequisite: SPA 202 or equivalent)
and;
two of the following:
HIS 251 – Latin American Civilization
HIS 252 – Latin American Nations
HIS 361 – Maya World     
 
It is also recommended that Latin American Studies minors participate in a short-term academic experience outside of the United States (of one week or longer, for at least one semester hour). Current programs providing this kind of opportunity include NDI 345 – Service Learning on the U.S./Mexico Border, BIO 375 – Caribbean Biogeography/Belize and NDI 120 – Latin American Cultural History.

Special Notes

  • All students must complete the requirements outlined for their major(s) and/or minor(s) in the undergraduate Heidelberg Catalog. In addition, they must complete the General Education requirements  for their selected degree (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science) as described in the catalog. Each degree requires students to take courses in the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, cultures and mathematics. These courses are designed to provide a broad liberal arts background and skills specific to the particular degree program.
