Mathematics Department
Why study mathematics and be a mathematician?
- Because in a modern, high-tech society, there is a great need for mathematicians and individuals with advanced mathematical skills. Mathematics is a fundamental tool and plays a central role in disciplines such as biology, chemistry, computer science, economics, engineering, geology, finance, physics and psychology. Documented skills in mathematics are a great advantage, and sometimes a necessity, when seeking admission into graduate programs in many of these areas.
- Because there are many employment opportunities for individuals who complete a bachelor’s degree in mathematics – actuarial science, cryptography, financial consulting and teaching, to name a few.
- Because the study of mathematics is intellectually stimulating. As students’ mathematical skills grow, they become better thinkers and problem solvers and are able to deal with more complex problems that require creative solutions.
