Performance & Additional Opportunities
Performance Opportunities
The Music Education program provides excellent opportunities for applied and ensemble study. These experiences are vital to the successful music educator:
- Private applied study (primary/secondary) in instrumental, keyboard, voice. Students prepare for junior and senior recitals, other performance opportunities throughout their college career
- Instrumental Ensembles: Symphonic Band, College-Community Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Brass Band, Chamber Ensembles: Flute Choir, Clarinet/Saxophone Ensembles, Brass Quintet, Percussion Ensemble, Piano Ensemble
- Choral Ensembles: Concert Choir, College-Community Chorus, Chamber Singers, Singing Collegians (Show Choir)
- Opera/Music Theater opportunities, in conjunction with the Department of Theater; related classes in acting, directing, stagecraft are available. Fall productions present music/light opera productions. A Spring Opera Workshop production provides performance experience with opera literature appropriate for the college-level voice, as well as additional work with the lyric music theater tradition.
Additional Opportunities
The Music Education program is augmented by a variety of experiences that add to the quality of a student’s education. These opportunities include:
- Faculty Artist Recitals – Each year, Heidelberg music faculty members present recitals on campus; this tradition also includes an annual Faculty Gala program.
- Guest Artist Recitals – The Department of Music invites distinguished artists from all over the country and the world to its campus for special recital programs. Some of these artists are former Heidelberg graduates, who come back to campus to perform and talk with students about their experiences in the professional world of music.
- Master Classes – Various guest artists and composers will offer special master classes to Heidelberg music students, as time allows.
- Messiah - A tradition that dates back more than one hundred years occurs each December, as the Department presents this important seasonal masterwork with full chorus, orchestra and professional-caliber soloists.
- New Music Festival – An annual event that celebrates the latest in contemporary music. Prominent composers, including Pulitzer-Prize winning artists, along with fine performers come to campus each spring for a three-day festival of concerts, lectures and demonstrations.
- Student music organizations, honorary societies:
- The Heidelberg Chapter of the Ohio Music Education Association, open to all students in Music Education, monitors professional developments in music education through monthly meetings and contact with the state and national organizations.
- The Heidelberg Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association is open to all students interested in the choral professions. Heidelberg’s ACDA Student Chapter expands the choral curriculum beyond the classroom and provides practical experience for students as conductors and choral educators. In addition this organization provides vital assistance to the choral program: recruitment, choir activities, concerts, receptions, clinics, festivals, etc.
- Tau Mu Sigma, Heidelberg’s music honorary society, selects members on the basis of musical ability and general scholastic standing. Its program encourages masterly musical achievement and good fellowship.
