Philosophy Major
Courses in philosophy are useful in careers such as law, business, social work, science, teaching, religion and art. Students may elect courses that relate to specific careers such as PHI 317 (Philosophy of Religion) for pre-ministerial students or PHI 309, 310 (History of Western Philosophy) for those majoring in history and/or a social science area.
Major Academic Plan
Philosophy majors must take 30 semester hours of Philosophy (PHI); these 30 hours must include:
PHI 140 – Introduction to Philosophy
PHI 202 – Logic or PHI 380 – Symbolic Logic
PHI 216 – Ethics
PHI 309 – History of Western Philosophy: Ancient and Medieval
PHI 310 – History of Western Philosophy: Modern
PHI 490 – Philosophy Colloquium
Majors also must take 12 additional PHI semester hours at or above the 200 level.
Special Notes

A maximum of 6 semester hours may be taken in PHI 413 or 414 – Independent Study or PHI 475 or 476 – Honors Course.
- All students must complete the General Education requirements for the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees that are described in the college catalog. Each degree requires students to take courses in the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, cultures and mathematics. These courses are designed to provide a broad liberal arts background and skills specific to the particular degree program.
