Religion Major
Coursework for the Religion major provides undergraduate preparation for students who plan to continue their study in a theological seminary or graduate school.
Major Academic Plan
Religion Courses
Religion majors must take 30 semester hours of Religion (REL)*; these 30 hours must include:
REL 201 – Introduction to the Old Testament
REL 202 – Introduction to the New Testament
REL 204 – Religions of the World
REL 308 – History of Christian Thought
REL 309 – Contemporary Christian Thought
REL 490 – Senior Seminar or REL 476 – Departmental Honors (by permission of chair)
* The following courses may be included in the 30 hours in Religion:
PHI 309 – History of Western Philosophy: Ancient and Medieval
PHI 310 – History of Western Philosophy: Modern
PHI 317 – Philosophy of Religion
Allied Courses
In addition to the courses noted above, Religion majors must also take 9 semester hours from:
Philosophy (PHI);
English (ENG - selected literature courses);
Non-Departmental and Integrated Studies (NDI – selected literature and fine arts courses); and/or History (HIS; selected world history courses).
Special Notes
- A maximum of 6 semester hours may be taken in REL 413 or 414 – Independent Study or REL 475 or 476 – Honors Course.
- REL 370 – Internship does not count toward the required hours for the major.
- All students must complete the General Education requirements for the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees that are described in the college catalog. Each degree requires students to take courses in the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, cultures and mathematics. These courses are designed to provide a broad liberal arts background and skills specific to the particular degree program.
