Why study Sport Management?

Want to get in on one of the hottest fields in athletics? This major is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions or graduate school in the growing field of sport management.

The field of sport management encompasses vast avenues of career directions in the sport industry. You could work as a director, a facility manager, a promoter, a sports information director, a fitness director, a marketer and an administrator.

Demand for trained individuals can lead to employment with professional sports organizations, colleges and universities, private clubs, city recreation departments, retail sales and government programs.

Why study sport management at Heidelberg?

The sport management major involves coursework from a variety of disciplines at Heidelberg, so you’ll have a well-rounded training when you graduate. The required core of courses provides a background in different areas to prepare students with a base of knowledge from which to build their area of concentration.

Students enrolled in the sport management major will take coursework from a variety of instructors during their major preparation. Among them:

•  Dr. Gary Keener, professor of economics, B.S., Juris Doctor, M.S., and Ph.D. degrees.
•  Director of Athletics Jerry McDonald, B.S., M.Ed.
•  Margo Greciar, professor in athletic training and director of the Athletic Training Education Program, B.S., M.Ed.
•  Wendy Rochon, instructor in Health and Physical Education, B.S., M.Ed.

Areas of concentration

Students can choose from three areas of concentration:

Fitness involves coursework in nutrition, anatomy and kinesiology, exercise physiology and a variety of recommended electives. This concentration is designed to prepare a student in the fitness and wellness arena of sport management.

Public relations involves coursework in communications, media, journalism and recommended electives. This concentration is designed to prepare students for the public relations arena of sport management.

Business involves coursework primarily in business, accounting, economics and recommended electives. This concentration is designed to prepare students for the financial arena of sport management.

Internship opportunities

The HPE Department and the Office of Career Development will work with students to develop internship opportunities, which are highly recommended. Internships provide students with valuable educational experience in an area of sports management of their choice.
