English facultyWriting and literature for the future

The study of language, writing, and literature is about passion. Heidelberg’s Department of English offers a variety of courses that will cultivate that passion among undergrads. The department offers a major and a minor in English with two concentrations, literature and writing. But even if you are not a major or minor, courses in English are still helpful in your journey to professionalism."Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become." - C.S. Lewis

Courses in English help students refine critical thinking, analytical, and writing skills, as well as continue their appreciation for literature. These techniques help prepare students for the professional world and virtually any career. English majors can find jobs in almost any field, including law, journalism, public relations, education, freelance writing, public services, and many more. English complements other fields of study and often can be used as a pre-professional degree. Students can go on to complete master’s degrees in other areas, all the while aided by their bachelor’s degree in English.

English at Heidelberg supports the liberal arts, such as other humanities, theatre arts, communications, film, sciences and social sciences, and business. By collaborating with other departments, the Department of English is able to create a diverse program that tailors to each student’s interest.

We welcome all students to see what the Heidelberg University Department of English can offer you!
