School of Music

Welcome to the Heidelberg School of Music. We are proud of our 125-year history of excellence in music, our tremendously talented faculty, our many successful alumni, and our excellent students. I invite you to explore this site, to visit us, and to find out more about the Heidelberg story. As you know, there are many excellent schools of music in Ohio and the U.S., see what separates music at Heidelberg from other institutions.

You can learn about our many choral and instrumental ensembles, where you will also find links to recordings of the groups in performance. You can contact ensemble directors directly: Bands and Jazz Ensemble – Dr. John E. Owen; Orchestra – Dr. Barbara Specht; Choirs – Dr. Gregory Ramsdell. Our ensembles welcome students from all majors.

We offer 5 degree options on the Bachelor of Music degree; BA and BS degrees which allow combining music with other academic areas; and music minors. Heidelberg offers a rich and varied set of performances, programs, and events each year, including faculty and guest artist series, ensemble performances, student performances, and our acclaimed New Music Festival. Many of these events are offered free of charge.

Heidelberg enjoys a national reputation in music, due in large part to our outstanding faculty, who bring experiences in performing and teaching from the world’s leading Schools of Music and concert halls. Faculty have national and international experience in performing, conducting, composing, and teaching music.

We are pleased to offer a generous and highly-competitive music scholarship package. Auditions are required for students entering music degree programs, and for students hoping to qualify for a non-major scholarship for performing in ensembles. See a full description of audition dates and requirements.

While you can learn a lot about a university on a website, I hope you will visit us to find out what makes us special. Prospective students are invited to attend a Music Preview Day, sit in with ensembles, talk to a professor, arrange a free introductory lesson, and to meet our students. Heidelberg combines professional preparation with a caring, nurturing atmosphere which allows our students to develop to their fullest. I hope you will visit us.

Sincerely,
Dr. John E. Owen
