Bachelor of Music: Music Education
The Bachelor of Music Education degree program trains highly qualified, well-rounded music educators for teaching positions in public and private schools. Heidelberg students are prepared to teach instrumental, vocal and classroom music at all age levels, from ages 3-21.
Careers In Music Education
Music education students choose an instrumental, strings, keyboard or vocal emphasis, but receive training in all music teaching areas, allowing for versatility in the classroom and maximizing potential for employment.
The program meets all State of Ohio teaching licensure standards and has an outstanding placement record. Students receive extensive field experience in schools, as well as continual mentoring from doctorally-prepared music faculty. Additional paid teaching opportunities are available in the Heidelberg Community Music School.
Graduates of the Music Education program become outstanding teachers and leaders in the field of music education, and are well prepared for graduate study.
The Heidelberg Advantage: Music Education
The Heidelberg School of Music has been educating musicians for more than 100 years and is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM.) Our music faculty members are dedicated teachers as well as established musicians who continue to pursue performance, composition and research opportunities. With a low student-to-faculty ratio, music students at Heidelberg benefit from personal attention and private lessons, which are available for no additional fees. Music scholarships are also offered to complement other forms of financial aid. To see more advantages of music at Heidelberg, visit www.heidelberg.edu/academiclife/depts/music/info/why
Performance Opportunities
Heidelberg offers music students numerous performance opportunities, from recitals to choral/instrumental ensembles to opera and musical theatre. Choral Ensembles include Concert Choir, University-Community Chorus, Singing Collegians (show/jazz choir), and Chamber Singers. Instrumental Ensembles include Symphonic Band, Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensembles (Big Band and Combos), Athletic Band, and Chamber Ensembles (Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion, Strings)
Additional Opportunities
Music majors also benefit from attending faculty and guest artist recitals, master classes, and the annual New Music Festival. Students may also participate in the annual campus performance of Messiah and may pursue membership in music organizations and honorary societies, such as Tau Mu Sigma, The Heidelberg Chapter of the Ohio Music Education Association, and the Heidelberg Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association.
Curriculum
The Music Education curriculum includes specialized courses for prospective music teachers: Introduction to Music Education, Elementary Music Teaching, Secondary Choral Methods, and Secondary Instrumental methods. Courses are also available in areas of emphasis, including pedagogy, language, diction, and literature courses. Music education students work cooperatively with the Heidelberg School of Education to complete pedagogy, curriculum, and teaching psychology courses.
