Bachelor of Music: Theory/Composition

Bachelor of Music: Theory/Composition
The Bachelor of Music degree program in Music Theory/Composition prepares young composers for an active career as a creative artist, writing music for a variety of performing media, both classical and commercial. Related studies in music theory augment the development of compositional techniques; it also enables composers to teach in a related field at the college/university level.

Career Opportunities
Heidelberg's Bachelor of Music with an emphasis in Music Theory/Composition degree option prepares students for careers writing music for classical and commercial performing media. The program combines training in acoustic and electronic compositional techniques with the study of music theory and provides students with regular opportunities to refine compositions in ensemble rehearsals and showcase finished pieces in recitals.
Composition students at Heidelberg have access to two labs with computer and electronic music equipment and benefit from the expertise of two faculty members who are accomplished composers. Students also network with award-winning composers and performers at the annual New Music Festival held on campus.

The program's portfolio requirement provides students with a selection of composed work that can supplement application for graduate school and other professional opportunities. Program graduates have sought further study and enjoyed successful careers as university-level music theory and composition instructors. For many composers, teaching allows for financial security coupled with the freedom to pursue commissions and other compositional projects.

The Heidelberg Advantage: Music theory/composition
The Heidelberg School of Music has been educating musicians for more than 100 years and is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM.) Our music faculty members are dedicated teachers as well as established musicians who continue to pursue performance, composition and research opportunities. With a low student-to-faculty ratio, music students at Heidelberg benefit from personal attention and private lessons, which are available for no additional fees. Music scholarships are also offered to complement other forms of financial aid. To see more advantages of music at Heidelberg, visit www.heidelberg.edu/academiclife/depts/music/info/why
