Music Minor
The music minor program is designed to serve students who wish to continue with their love of music, even though they are planning a major in a different discipline. The program provides for private study in the areas of instrumental, keyboard or vocal music, in addition to participation in college ensembles. There are also opportunities to take courses in music.
Students who start the music minor program early in their college career can later choose to expand the level of their studies to that of a major in music through the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree program. Music as a major combines well with most of the other majors on the Heidelberg campus.
The Heidelberg Advantage: BA/BS degrees
The Heidelberg School of Music has been educating musicians for more than 100 years and is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM.) Our music faculty members are dedicated teachers as well as established musicians who continue to pursue performance, composition and research opportunities. With a low student-to-faculty ratio, music students at Heidelberg benefit from personal attention and private lessons, which are available for no additional fees. Music scholarships are also offered to complement other forms of financial aid. To see more advantages of music at Heidelberg, visit www.heidelberg.edu/academiclife/depts/music/info/why
Performance Opportunities
Heidelberg offers music students numerous performance opportunities, from recitals to choral/instrumental ensembles to opera and musical theatre. Choral Ensembles include Concert Choir, University-Community Chorus, Singing Collegians (show/jazz choir), and Chamber Singers. Instrumental Ensembles include Symphonic Band, Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensembles (Big Band and Combos), Athletic Band, and Chamber Ensembles (Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion, Strings)
Additional Opportunities
Music majors also benefit from attending faculty and guest artist recitals, master classes, and the annual New Music Festival. Students may also participate in the annual campus performance of Messiah and may pursue membership in music organizations and honorary societies, such as Tau Mu Sigma, The Heidelberg Chapter of the Ohio Music Education Association, and the Heidelberg Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association.
Curriculum
Heidelberg's music program focuses on the following areas: performance, theory/history, musicianship, music electives and general education. This combination of areas offers music students applied study and specialized knowledge coupled with a broader-based liberal arts background.
