Academic Mentoring

At Heidelberg University, we recognize that advising and the timely delivery of information are critical components to your academic success. Academic Advising at Heidelberg is referred to as Academic Mentoring.

Academic Mentoring provides students a way to meet the University’s four Responsibility Goals

  1. Value and pursue academic excellence and intellectual growth
  2. Develop personal and professional responsibility
  3. Act with integrity in all aspects of one’s life
  4. Become engaged through participation and service in one’s communities and the ability to incorporate that understanding into goal setting and planning in their academic, professional and personal lives;

Quality mentoring is essential in helping students make the most of their college experience. Mentoring supports and reinforces the interconnectedness between general education, major coursework, and co- and extra-curricular experiences. Academic mentoring supports the University’s mission of a community of learning that promotes and nurtures intellectual, personal and professional development, leading to a life of purpose with distinction.

Goals and Objectives

  • Mentoring should convey the basic goals of the university, including the broad aims of a Liberal Arts education, the more specific aims of the general education requirements, and the necessities of the major.
  • Mentoring should provide students with the opportunity to develop meaningful educational plans and learning goals compatible with their career and life goals.
    • Help students understand the value of the general education program.
    • Assist students in choosing educational and career objectives compatible with their skills, interests, and abilities.
    • Assist students for education beyond the baccalaureate.

Mentor Assignments

Every student is assigned a faculty mentor. Faculty mentors are full-time faculty. The Director of Faculty Student Advising & Support coordinates with department chairs the assignment of incoming students to mentors and provides orientation and support to faculty mentors.

New students are enrolled in the three semester AIM Hei program and are assigned to a faculty mentor in their intended major department or another department. Students who are undecided about a future major are assigned mentors across the disciplines. An attempt is made to distribute students equally among the faculty. Each faculty member has a cap of approximately 16-20 total students.

Students are encouraged to stay with the same mentor during the first academic year. However, first and second-year students may request a change of mentor through the Director of Faculty Student Advising & Support. Mentors may also request that a student be reassigned by contacting the Director of Faculty Student Advising & Support.

Transfer and Adult Students are assigned a faculty mentor upon consultation with the  Director of Faculty Student Advising & Support.
