Curriculum

Heidelberg University’s Master of Music Education (MME) is a 30-semester-hour (three-summer) degree plan.

Required Courses (16-20 hours)

MUS 502 - Research in Music Education (3 hrs.)
MUS 563 - Music Teaching and Learning (3 hrs.)
MUS 573 - Philosophy of Music Education (3 hrs.)
MUS 574 - Curriculum Design in Music Education (3 hrs.)
MUS 522 - Graduate Theory (2 hrs.)*
MUS 548 - Graduate History (2 hrs.)*
MUS 598 - Capstone Experience (0 hrs.) or MUS 599 - Music Education Thesis (1-4 hrs.)**

*     Students who do not pass the diagnostic entrance exams in music history and music theory must first register for MUS 521 Graduate Theory Review and/or MUS 547 Graduate Music History Review. MUS 521 and MUS 547 do not count toward the 30 hours required for the degree.
**    MUS 599 repeatable to a maximum of 4 hours.

Elective Courses: 10-14 hours

A minimum of 6 hours of electives must have the MUS prefix. At least 3 hours must have the EDU or COU prefix.

A series of workshops based on the needs of practicing music educators:
1. Instrumental rehearsing and repertoire
2. Choral rehearsing and repertoire
3. Show choir rehearsing and repertoire
4. Graduate conducting   
5. Technology in music education
6. Teaching jazz and improvisation
7. Musical theatre techniques
8. Survey of world music
9. Marching band rehearsal and show design

MUS 595 - Directed Readings in Music (1-2 hrs.)
MUS 596 - Independent Study (1-2 hrs.)***
EDU 500 - Instructional Theory and Practice (3 hrs.)
EDU 504 - Professional Ethics (3 hrs.)
EDU 520 - Computers in Education I (3 hrs.)
EDU 522 - Introduction to Data Analysis (3 hrs.)
EDU 527 - Child & Adolescent Development (3 hrs.) or COU 503 - Human Growth and Development (3 hrs.)

***     A maximum of 6 semester hours of applied instruction or independent study may be counted toward the MME degree. There is an additional fee for applied instruction.
