Special Programs of Study at Heidelberg

Because Heidelberg is a small college focused on teaching, our students have access to special programs and offerings that enhance their experience.

Among these, the first-year experience allows students to hone their skills for college in small, discussion-based classroom settings. Topics of study in the past have ranged from an examination of biology’s most interesting idiosyncrasies to fairy tales in pop culture, to civil rights in literature adapted to film. Students learn to think critically, write clearly, and research effectively while making friends, learning college and life skills, and starting to think about their lives and potential major fields of study.

Heidelberg’s Honors Program is another way for motivated students to expand their intellectual reasoning skills, while participating in other experiences that help to broaden their perspectives and think more creatively. The program includes special Honors seminars, service to the community, and a capstone project that serves as a valuable piece of work as they apply to graduate programs or search for jobs. Honors students have access to a special Honors House for studying or collaborative work, early registration, and eligibility for a study abroad program at Oxford University in Oxford, England.
