Clear Forecast and Avid Supporters Turn in Successful Golf Outing
The Westfield Group Country Club was the site for the fourth annual Heidelberg College “H” Association Back the Berg Golf Outing on Friday, July 27. A total of 25 groups, 95 golfers in total, hit the links in support of Heidelberg’s student-athletes. Despite the recent rain in the area, Heidelberg was fortunate enough to find a five hour block that was rain free. In the end, the foursome of Rob Karnes, Jim Robson, John Buccigross and Todd Bertermann shot a 57, 14 under par, to take home first-place honors. Following a close second at 12 under par was the group of Ken Smith, David Briller, Brian Porter and Pat Rollins.
To start the event off, George Smith controlled the practice putting green and won the putting contest. Seven holes offered skill challenges for each golfer, including long putt, closest to the line, long drive and closest to the pin in two shots. Showing his versatility on both the fairway and the green was Doug Allison. Allison won the closet to the pin in two shots on hole five, along with long putt on 15. Heidelberg’s head volleyball and wrestling coach Jason Miller was the closest to the line on hole two, while Rollins had the closest to the pin in two shots on 13. John Verdes and Jason Bebout had the longest drive on holes three and 18, respectively, and Bob Overholt won the long putt on hole number nine.
Rounding out the list of winners on the day was the skins winners. On the par five hole number three, the trio of Bebout, Chuck Maricle and Kevin Skully shot an eagle. Shooting a birdie on hole 16, a par three, was Karnes, Robson, Buccigross and Bertermann.
