Punta Gorda, Fla. – March 7, 2010 – The entire starting lineup for the no. 8 ranked Heidelberg University baseball team registered at least one hit apiece to lead the way for a 14-2 win over Juniata College at the Snowbird Classic. For the game Heidelberg finished with 17 hits, seven of which were for extra bases. The game was played at the South County Regional Park located in Punta Gorda, Fla. The win improved Heidelberg to 4-0 on the year, while Juniata falls to 1-2.
Heidelberg doubled up a six run advantage in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Leading 8-2, the Berg strung together seven-straight hits to start the inning and plated six runs to push the final score to 14-2. Knocking in two runs in the inning was Willie Brechun (Canton, Ohio / Canton Central Catholic), while Ricardo Lizcano (Toledo, Ohio / Roy C. Start), Jason Lash (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville), Gar Keen (Sparta, Ohio / Highland) and Derek Andrzejczak (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) each had one RBI.
Leading the way at the plate for the Berg was Lizcano, going 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored. Brechun went 2-for-2 with two walks, three runs batted in and three runs scored to back Lizcano. Also registering multiple hits was Keen, Lash and Alex Monroe (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston). Lash finished with a double and a triple and had two RBI. Monroe knocked in three runs of his own.
On the mound, senior right-hander Everett Thomas (Nashua, N.H. / Evansville (Ind.)) threw a four-hitter in 6.0 innings of work to pick up the win. Along the way he struck out five and gave up two earned runs. Closing out the game was Ross Pruitt (Elletsville, Ind. / Edgewood) and Daniel Brannum (Jamestown, Ohio / Greeneview). The duo struck out five of the last nine batters of the game and did not allow a hit.
Heidelberg concludes play at the Snowbird Classic tomorrow against Kenyon College. First pitch is slated for 9:30 a.m. Beginning on Thursday, Heidelberg will start a four-game swing in LaGrange, Ga.
