'Berg Closes Snowbird Classic 5-0

Punta Gorda, Fla. – March 8, 2010 – Freshman right-hander Ethan Holt (Galion, Ohio / West Holmes) threw a two-hitter, while striking out five, in 7.0 innings of work to lead the no. 8 Heidelberg University baseball team to a 5-0 win over Kenyon College at the 2010 Snowbird Classic. The win closes out Heidelberg’s stint at the classic at 5-0, while Kenyon opens up 0-1.

Heidelberg’s Ricardo Lizcano (Toledo, Ohio / Roy C. Start) connected for a two-out double to the left field corner to knock in two runs to break a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. Scoring for the Berg was Steve Decker (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield) and Alex Monroe (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston).

In the top of the sixth, Heidelberg went to work once again with two outs and pushed its lead to 3-0. Monroe earned a base on balls before stealing second. He crossed home plate on an RBI single to left field by Elvin Williams (Euclid, Ohio / Euclid).

Willie Brechun (Canton, Ohio / Canton Central Catholic) sandwiched a double to right center field between two outs to start the top of the seventh for the Berg. He advanced to third on a wild pitch to assist with an RBI single by Derek Andrzejczak (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview). After seven innings of play the Berg led 4-0.

Heidelberg extended its lead to five runs, 5-0, with a two-out RBI double by pinch hitter Justin Suddeth (Warren, Ohio / Howland) in its final at bat. Suddeth knocked in Andrzejczak who preceded him with a double of his own.

The Heidelberg hitters combined for nine hits. Leading the way was Lizcano going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a walk. Andrzejczak finished at 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Picking up a hit apiece was Williams, Gar Keen (Sparta, Ohio / Highland), Brechun, Jason Lash (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) and Suddeth.

Next up for the Berg is a four-game stint in LaGrange, Ga. at LaGrange College. Heidelberg opens up with host LaGrange, Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
