Adrian, Mich. – March 19, 2010 – Success happens for teams that can battle under any circumstances. In a 13-9 road victory over Adrian College the Heidelberg University baseball team battled a deficit to earn success. The Berg trailed the Bulldogs 9-4 before scoring eight runs in the sixth inning to post the win.
The game pitted two nationally ranked foes, as the Berg ranks third in the nation according to D3baseball.com and Adrian is 24th. Following the win the Berg stands at 10-1 overall and Adrian is 4-3.
Heidelberg trailed the Bulldogs 9-4 heading into the top half of the sixth inning. An eight-run inning off of four hits produced the eventual game-winning run. Smart base running by Ricardo Lizcano (Toledo, Ohio / Roy C. Start)plated the winning run, scoring on a wild pitch. Steve Decker (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield) followed with a two-RBI triple to left center to add some insurance runs. A third insurance run was plated in the seventh to push the final score to 13-9.
At the plate Heidelberg finished with 14 hits. Elvin Williams (Euclid, Ohio / Euclid) led the way finishing 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI. Willie Brechun (Canton, Ohio / Canton Central Catholic) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Finishing 2-for-4 was Decker. He added three RBI and scored once.
Throwing 2.2 innings in relief to pick up the win was freshman Ethan Holt (Galion, Ohio / West Holmes). Holt gave up just five hits, while striking out five to improve his record on the mound to 2-0.
Heidelberg and Adrian concludes a three-game series tomorrow, March 20, at Peaceful Valley in Tiffin. Game one is set for 1:00 p.m.
