Winning Streak Halted

Tiffin, Ohio – March 24, 2010 – The no. 2 ranked Heidelberg University baseball team had its six-game winning streak snapped today at the hands of Case Western Reserve University at Peaceful Valley in Tiffin, Ohio. The Spartans posted a 6-3 non-conference victory to improve to 10-7, while the Berg stands at 13-2.

The Spartans strung together a couple early hits to plate a run in its first at bat. The Berg would even the game at a run apiece in the third inning on a Willie Brechun (Canton, Ohio / Canton Central Catholic) RBI single down the left field line.

Case Western Reserve regained the lead with two runs in the fourth and went on to push its advantage to 5-1 at the middle of the seventh inning. Heidelberg did not quit and scored two runs in the bottom half of the seventh to pull within two, 5-3. With two outs Ricardo Lizcano (Toledo, Ohio / Roy C. Start) hit a home run to left field, knocking in Elvin Williams (Euclid, Ohio /Euclid) in the process.

Heidelberg was held scorless the remainder of the contest, while in the ninth, the Spartans added an insurance run to push the final score to 6-3.

For the game, Case Western Reserve finished with 12 hits compared to eight by the Berg. Lizcano led the Berg going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Gar Keen (Sparta, Ohio / Highland) finished at 2-for-4.

Suffering the loss on the mound to fall to 2-1 on the year was Ethan Holt (Galion, Ohio / West Holmes). Holt got the start and went 4.1 innings. He gave up nine hits, four earned runs, while striking out three.
