Tiffin, Ohio – March 31, 2010 – A dominant performance on the mound combined with big bats at the plate clinched a win for the nationally ranked Heidelberg Universitybaseball team. Heidelberg topped Wittenberg University by a score of 11-1. The Berg improves to 16-2, while Wittenberg drops to 8-8 on the season.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first, junior Willie Brechum (Canton, Ohio / Canton Central Catholic) knocked in the first run for the Berg with a single to left field to tie it.
Heidelberg would add five more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Alex Monroe (Chagrin Falls / Kenston) had sacrifice fly to for what would to be the game-winning run. Sophomore Ricardo Lizcano (Toledo, Ohio / Roy C. Start) earned an RBI with a single through the left side of the field, while junior Gar Keen (Sparta, Ohio / Highland) brought in two more runs with a double down the right field line. Keen is tied with Brechum for first on the team with 10 doubles on the season.
The Berg would add two more runs in the third, courtesy of Lizcano double to the left field. Heidelberg added insurance in the seventh with putting three more runs on the board which included Keen tripling to center field to bring in a run. This marked Keen’s first triple on the season.
All of Heidelberg starters earned a hit, totaling 18. Leading the way was Lizcano who went 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Keen contributed with a 2-for-5 outing, which included three RBI and a run scored.
Freshman pitcher Ethan Holt (Galion, Ohio / West Holmes) earned his first complete game of his career, while only giving up one earned run off two hits. Holt retired seven batters.
Heidelberg is back in action on Friday, April 2 to host conference foe Muskingum University. The game marks Berg’s conference opener and is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
