Wooster, Ohio – April 14, 2010 – The no. 4 ranked Heidelberg University baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision to the no. 6 ranked College of Wooster today at Art Murray Field. The Berg now stands at 23-5 while the Scots improve to 21-6 on the year.
Heidelberg and Wooster exchanged one run a piece in the first inning.
Heidelberg's Elvin Williams (Euclid, Ohio / Euclid) and Ricardo Lizcano (Toledo, Ohio / Roy C. Start) got things started with back-to-back singles. With runners on the corners Gar Keen (Sparta, Ohio / Highland) grounded into a double play, while bringing home Williams to take the early 1-0 lead.
Wooster matched the Berg’s run in the bottom of the first with a solo homer to center field.
The Scots would add another run in the fifth with a homerun and three more in the seventh to push the lead 5-1. The deficit would be too much for Heidelberg to overcome.
Six ’Berg players picked up a hit in the game. Leading the way was Lizcano going 2-for-4. Finishing with a hit apiece was Williams, Jason Lash (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville), Steve Decker (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield), Zach Colatruglio(Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick), and Andrew Buelow (Marysville, Mich. / Marysville).
Everett Thomas (Nashua, N.H. / Harrison (Ind.)) got the start, pitching 6.1 innings. He allowed four earned runs off seven hits, while retiring one. Thomas is now 3-1 on the season.
Andy Lowe (Fort Wayne Ind. / Carroll) closed things for the Berg throwing 1.2 innings. Lowe gave up one run, none earned and allowed two hits.
The Berg is in the midst of a five-game week that pits them against three opponents that are mentioned in the recent D3baseball.com national poll released on Tuesday. Yesterday, Heidelberg swept a doubleheader with Ohio Northern University and will close out the week with a doubleheader at Marietta College on Saturday. The first game is slated for 1:00 p.m.
