Top-Ranked Heidelberg Falls to Adrian

Adrian, Mich. – March 19, 2011 – A walk off single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Adrian College baseball team a 2-1 victory over top-ranked Heidelberg University this afternoon at Nicolay Field in Adrian, Mich.

The loss is the first on the year for the Berg who stands at 10-1, while Adrian improves to 5-3. Today’s contest was originally scheduled to be played at Peaceful Valley in Tiffin, Ohio, but was changed due to poor field conditions.

Back-to-back walks and a passed ball for Alex Monroe (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston) and Derek Andrzejczak (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) set the stage for Jordan Martin (Powell, Ohio / Olentangy Liberty) to break a scoreless tie in the second inning. Martin had a sacrifice fly to left field to plate the first run of the ballgame.

A RBI single by Adrian’s Andrew DeLuca tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Adrian opened up the eighth with a double, but Heidelberg’s Andy Lowe (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Carroll) entered the game and he was left stranded.

Heidelberg threatened in the top of the 10th with back-to-back singles by Gar Keen (Sparta, Ohio / Highland) and Willie Brechun (Canton, Ohio / Canton Central Catholic), but the duo was left on the base paths. In the end, Heidelberg left 11 on the bases.

Ethan Holt (Galion, Ohio / West Holmes) got the start and went 7.0 innings. He gave up six hits, one earned run and struck out three in the no decision. Lowe threw the final 2.2 innings and gave up two hits and one earned run, while striking out four. Lowe suffered his first loss on the mound.
