Baseball Drops Second Straight on Road

Delaware, Ohio – March 20, 2011 – The no. 2 ranked Heidelberg University baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Ohio Wesleyan University at Littick Field in Delaware, Ohio today, March 23. After opening the year at 10-0 on neutral territory, the Berg has dropped three of its last four contests on the road in the northern states to stand at 11-3 overall. The Battling Bishops improve to 7-8 on the year.

The win by OWU evens the season series at a game apiece. Heidelberg posted a 6-2 win on March 8 during both teams spring break trip to the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Derek Andrzejczak (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) got things started for the Berg in the third. He led the inning off with a hard hit single up the middle. Two batters later Andrzejczak scored off a RBI single to left center by Alex Monroe (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston). Monroe came around the bases and eventually scored on a throwing error by the Battling Bishops shortstop.

Eric Livingston made quick work of Ohio Wesleyan’s deficit in the bottom half of the inning with a home run to right field.

Ohio Wesleyan plated three runs in the sixth inning to push the final score to 4-2. With two outs, Zach Frentsos had a RBI single to left center and Steve Gaydos followed with a two-RBI double to right center.

The Heidelberg offense had seven hits, but left 10 base runners stranded. Andrzejczak had two hits, while Monroe, Jason Lash (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville), Willie Brechun (Canton, Ohio / Canton Central Catholic), Gar Keen (Sparta, Ohio / Highland) and Elvin Williams Jr. (Euclid, Ohio / Euclid) had a hit apiece.

Suffering the setback on the mound was Sylvester Nino (Willard, Ohio / Willard). Nino got the start and went 6.0 innings. He gave up four runs and struck out five to stand at 2-1 on the year.

Heidelberg will look to get back in the win column when it takes on Case Western Reserve University in a three-game series this weekend. The Berg will travel to Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday, March 26 for a noon doubleheader before hosting Case Western in its home opener on Sunday, March 27 at 1:00 p.m.
