Tiffin, Ohio – March 31, 2011 – The nationally ranked Heidelberg University baseball team closed out the month of March with a 6-5 setback to Ohio Wesleyan University at Peaceful Valley. The loss drops the Berg to 14-4 on the year, while the Battling Bishops improve to .500 at 10-10.
Heidelberg let a 5-2 lead evaporate in the sixth inning when Ohio Wesleyan plated four runs off of three hits and one ’Berg miscue to push the final score to 6-5. With two outs, James Toland hit a two-run home run to left center field to plate the game-tying and eventual game-winning run.
The Berg built its early advantage with three runs in its first at bat. Willie Brechun (Canton, Ohio / Canton Central Catholic) had a sacrifice fly and Derek Andrzejczak (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) knocked in two runs with a single to center field.
Ohio Wesleyan scored a run in the second and the third, but the Berg answered with a run apiece in the bottom half of the third and one in the fourth to push its final total to five before the Battling Bishops answered with its four-run sixth.
Knocking in Heidelberg’s final two runs was Brechun and Andrzejczak.
Suffering the loss on the mound was Branden Stucky (Medina, Ohio / Medina). Stucky threw 1.2 innings of relief and gave up one earned run. He struck out one and allowed two hits.
At the plate, Heidelberg registered just six hits on the day. Going 3-for-4 with three RBI was Andrzejczak. Finishing with a hit apiece was Ricardo Lizcano (Toledo, Ohio / Roy C. Start), Alex Monroe (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston) and Jason Lash (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville).
Heidelberg opens Ohio Athletic Conference play this weekend when it travels to Muskingum University on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader. The Berg is the four-time defending regular season champions.
