Baseball Stumbles for First Time at Mideast Regional

Marietta, Ohio – May 20, 2011 – The Heidelberg University baseball team could not overcome an early deficit and suffered its first setback at the 2011 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional hosted by Marietta College at Don Schaly Stadium. The Berg, seeded second, fell 23-6 to the top-seed and host Pioneers.

Heidelberg outscored Marietta 6-5 in the final five innings, but it was not enough to overcome an early 18-0 lead by the Pioneers. The Berg finished with eight hits, all of which came in the final five innings. Finishing with two hits apiece was Derek Andrzejczak (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) and Alex Monroe (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston). Andrzejczak knocked in three of Heidelberg’s five runs.

The setback drops the Berg to 35-12 on the year, while Marietta improves to 41-3. Heidelberg remains alive in the double-elimination regional and will face sixth seeded Case Western Reserve University tomorrow, May 21 at noon in an elimination game. The winner will advance to the championship game game later that afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
