TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University baseball team will play Case Western Reserve University in a split-site three-game series on Saturday and Sunday, March 24-25. Saturday’s doubleheader at Peaceful Valley in Tiffin is slated for 1 p.m., and Sunday’s game at Nobby’s Ballpark in University Circle is also schedule for 1 p.m.

All three games will be broadcast on the ‘Berg Athletics Network. Jeff Garvin will have the call on Saturday and John Gerstenberger will join Garvin in the booth for Sunday’s game.
The Student Princes (8-7) are coming off a 13-11 defeat Tuesday against Ohio Wesleyan University in their home opener. Despite the loss, the Berg rapped out 18 hits and sophomore Arneal Squibb (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) and seniors Ross Pruitt (Elletsville, Ind./Edgewood) and Ricardo Lizcano (Toledo/Start) each went 4-for-6 at the plate.
Through 15 games, the ‘Berg offense is paced by Pruitt, who is hitting .460 (23-for-50) with 13 runs batted-in, 10 runs scored and a .560 slugging percentage. Lizcano is batting .328 (19-for-58), has hit a team-high two home runs and driven in 13, and owns a .552 slugging percentage. Freshman third baseman Steve Kisan (Lakewood/St. Edward) is pacing at .316 (18-for-57) with one home run, nine RBI and 11 runs scored. Sophomore second baseman Joe Chiarappa (Clinton/St. Vincent-St. Mary’s) his batting .303 (10-for-33) and Squibb is hitting .300 (15-for-50).
Despite suffering Tuesday’s loss, junior right hander Teddy Lowe (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) has anchored the pitching staff out of the bullpen, going 3-2 in a team-high 10 appearances with a 5.28 earned run average and eight strikeouts over 15.1 innings. Senior righty Daniel Brannum (Jamestown/Greenview) is 2-0 in eight outings with a 3.94 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 16.0 innings. Both have earned saves. Junior righty Tyler Fruhwirth (Beavercreek) has guided the starting rotation with a 2-1 record in four appearances, including three starts with a 4.63 ERA and 15 strikeouts over 23.1 innings.
Case Western Reserve (12-6) is coming off a doubleheader sweep of Grove City (Pa.) College, in which they posted 10 runs in the first inning in a 12-3 win in the second game. Four Spartans are hitting near or above a .350 clip and slugging better than .500. Paul Pakan is tearing at a .424 (28-for-66) and ties team-highs of two home runs and 14 RBI, has scored 17 runs and boasts a 1.087 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. Brett Ossola is batting .391 (25-for-64) with one home run, 13 RBI, 10 runs scores and a .516 slugging percentage. Sam Alexander is hitting .369 (24-for-65) and matches Pakan with two homers and 14 RBI, has scored 11 runs and is slugging .523. Bobby Marko is batting .347 (17-for-49) with five RBI, nine runs and is slugging .510.
Jamie Hora has proved to be the staff ace, going 4-0 in five starts with a 3.18 ERA and 20 strikeouts against just six walks over 28.1 innings. Bradley Potter is 2-1 in four starts with a 1.35 ERA and 16 strikeouts over 26.2 innings and has recorded a complete game. Closer Jose Vega has a team-high six saves in seven appearances with a 4.26 ERA.
Heidelberg swept the season series from the Spartans a season ago, winning all five games, including two in the Mideast Regional of the NCAA Tournament. The Tri-Color outscored CWRU by a 55-21 margin in 2011.
Following this weekend’s series, the Student Princes host Adrian (Mich.) College on Tuesday, March 27 at Peaceful Valley in Tiffin at 4 p.m.
