NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Heidelberg University baseball dropped both games of an OAC doubleheader at Muskingum University, 2-0 and 10-9 in 10 innings.
In the first game, Muskingum starter Justin Warrington outdueled Heidelberg’s Tyler Fruhwurth (Beavercreek). Warrington allowed three hits and struck out five. Fruhwirth allowed two runs on five hits, but issued six walks.
The Muskies got on the board with a run in the fourth. Adam Bennett, who drew a leadoff walk, scored when Wes Fauver drew a bases loaded walk.
In the sixth, a double by Darren Garrett plated Nick Raymond for an insurance run.
Warrington worked a 1-2-3 seventh to close out Heidelberg.
Fruhwirth went the distance in the loss, falling to 2-3.
In the nightcap, Heidelberg (13-10, 2-4 OAC) scored first with a run in the third. Eric Monroe (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) singled, stole second and scored on a base hit by Doug Miller (West Friendship, MD/Glenelg Country School).
Miller had another RBI single in the fifth. Monroe, who had doubled, scored to put The Berg up 2-0.
Four singles and a walk in the bottom of the fifth chased ‘Berg starter Ryan Minteer (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) from the game. The Muskies took the lead with a three run inning.
Leading 3-2, Muskingum (4-16, 2-4 OAC) tacked on another in the sixth off of Heidelberg reliever Ben Sniezek (Dearborn Heights, MI/Crestwood).
In the top of the seventh, Monroe scored his third run of the game. He scored on a single by Jordan Martin (Powell/Olentangy Liberty).
Leading 4-3, the Muskies erupted for four runs in the seventh off of Travis Gray (Markle, IN/Norwell). With the bases loaded, the first run scored on a wild pitch. Nick Raymond singled home two more and Matt Connor doubled home another.
Down 8-3, Heidelberg scored five times in the eighth to tie it. Ben Blystone (Brownsburg, IN) singled and moved to third on a double by Joe Staab (Bellville/Clear Fork). A single by Steve Morse (Scottsdale, AZ/Orchard Lake St. Mary’s) scored Blystone and moved Staab to third. After a pitching change, Monroe was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With one out, Arneal Squibb (Mishawaka, IN) hit a bases-clearing triple to right. Squibb scored the tying run on an RBI groundout by Derek Hug (Bryan).
After a scoreless ninth, Heidelberg took the lead in the 10th. Monroe, who finished 3-for-5, singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Miller. With two down, Hug hit an RBI single to right. On the play, Monroe scored his fifth run of the game.
Trailing 9-8, Muskingum rallied in the 10th. Ethan Holt (Galion/Wet Holmes), who entered as a reliever in the eighth, allowed a single by Raymond to start the inning. Raymond moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Holt struck Garrett out, but the ball squirted away from Martin. Garrett was thrown out at first, but Raymond was able to move to third. After a walk, Michael Lynn hit a two-run walk-off double to left center.
Holt (2-1) picked up the loss despite striking out three in 2.2 innings of work.
The Student Princes return to Peaceful Valley for an OAC doubleheader on Wednesday. The first game against Ohio Northern begins at 1 p.m.
