BEREA – One big inning in both games of an OAC baseball doubleheader, one for Heidelberg University and one for host Baldwin Wallace University, resulted in a split for the Student Princes and Yellow Jackets on Wednesday. Heidelberg won 9-5 in the first game and Baldwin Wallace won 6-4 in the nightcap
Heidelberg scored five times in the final inning of the first game of an OAC doubleheader at Baldwin Wallace to turn a 5-4 deficit into a win.
Joe Staab (Bellville/Clear Fork) led off the seventh with a single through the left side and moved to second when Arneal Squibb (Mishawaka, IN) reached on a throwing error by BW starter Pat Havens. On a sacrifice bunt attempt by Steve Morse (Scottsdale, AZ/Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, MI), Staab slid into third just ahead of the throw by the Yellow Jackets. Havens gave way to Dylan Fodor, who plunked Eric Monroe (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) with his first pitch, which forced in the tying run.
Alex Grove (Canal Fulton/Canton Central Catholic) followed with a single that scored Squibb. Derek Hug (Bryan) hit into an RBI fielder’s choice, which gave Heidelberg a 7-5 lead. After Fodor recorded the second out with a strikeout, he hit Andrew Zenczak (Brunswick) with a pitch to load the bases again. Jordan Martin (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) laced a two-out two-run single through the right side. Grove and Hug scored to give Heidelberg a 9-5 advantage.
The Student Princes fell behind 3-0 through the first three innings. Heidelberg scored twice in the fourth on a Monroe sacrifice fly and a two-out single by Hug.
After BW scored a pair in the bottom of the fourth to lead 5-2, Heidelberg responded with two in the top of the fifth. Staab hit a double to score Zenczak, who was hit by a pitch. Squibb singled and Staab scored when the rightfielder mishandled the ball.
A scoreless sixth set up the last-inning magic for Heidelberg.
Chris Thomas (Canton/Perry) had a no-decision in his first start coming back from an injury. The righthander allowed four earned runs on three hits and three walks in 3.2 innings.
Adam Manner (Bellevue) picked up the win out of the bullpen. Manner (4-2) fanned a pair and allowed two hits in three scoreless innings of relief.
The Yellow Jackets (20-7, 9-3 OAC) took control of the second game with a four-run fifth inning. Reliever Ben Sniezek (Dearborn Heights, MI/Crestwood) faced five batters in the inning and allowed four hits and a walk before giving way to Dan Kilger (Novi, MI) who got out of the jam.
Baldwin Wallace took an early 1-0 lead in the first career start for Kyle Fluharty (Plymouth/Willard).
Heidelberg (16-13, 5-7 OAC) plated two runs in the top of the second to gain the advantage. An infield single by Zenczak scored Hug from third base. Later, Ben Blystone (Brownsburg, IN) scored on a passed ball.
Tied at two, the Student Princes regained the lead when Grove plated Squibb with a two-out single in the fifth.
Heidelberg’s 3-2 lead quickly evaporated in the bottom half of the inning.
Kilger threw four scoreless innings to give the Student Prince offense a chance to battle back into the game. The Berg had baserunners in each of the final four frames, but were unable to deliver a hit in the clutch.
Fluharty allowed two runs on five hits in 3.2 innings in a no-decision.
Teddy Lowe (Fort Wayne, IN/Carroll) worked a scored third of an inning in both contests.
Heidelberg returns home for a critical OAC doubleheader with Mount Union on Saturday. Prior to the 1 p.m. first pitch, Heidelberg baseball will celebrate Community Day, with free souvenirs and food available to fans. Following the game, the team will honor its seniors with an on-field ceremony.
