AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – On Monday, the Ohio Athletic Conference released the 2013 Baseball All-Conference teams. Five Heidelberg University players were included among the elite student-athletes.
Designated hitter Steve Morse (Scottsdale, AZ/Orchard Lake St. Mary's, MI) garnered first team honors after batting a team-high .347. Morse, a sophomore, led the team with 11 doubles.
Sophomore Alex Grove (Canal Fulton/Canton Central Catholic) hit a team-high three home runs and drove in 23 runs to earn a spot on the second team. A catcher, Grove threw out 11 would-be base stealers.
Second baseman Joe Staab (Bellville/Clear Fork), catcher/third baseman Jordan Martin (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) and pitcher Ethan Holt (Galion/West Holmes) were all named honorable mentions.
Staab hit .294 and drove in 21 runs from the leadoff spot. Staab helped turn 28 double plays on the season.
Martin split time at third base and behind the plate for 14-year head coach Matt Palm. The senior enjoyed his best season offensively, as he batted .301 and drove in 23 runs. Martin was also an honorable mention in 2012.
Holt, a senior, returned to the rotation after missing all of last season with an injury. He finished with a 4-2 record, including stellar back-to-back wins over Marietta and Mount Union. Holt's career winning percentage of .815 is second on Heidelberg's all-time list. He was a first team selection in 2010 and second team in 2011.
