Junior running back Cartel Brooks and senior outside hitter Amber Welfle have been named Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the first and second time this year.
Brooks’s performance on Saturday night against the Otterbein Cardinals not only earned him recognition from the OAC but also earned him a place among the Heidelberg football greats, in the record book.
Brooks rushed for a Heidelberg record 337 yards on 39 attempts and a record breaking five touchdowns. His career touchdown total of 39, sits one behind the all-time record held by Paul Yackey ‘52.
He averaged 8.6 yards per carry and had a long of 74 yards against Otterbein. Three of his touchdown runs were of 20-plus yards - 23 yards, 36 yards and 38 yards.
Cartel’s numbers are staggering compared to the other OAC running backs. He leads the conference in rushing yards per game with 153. yards per game with the his nearest competitor at 86.2 yards per game. Brooks also leads OAC running backs in scoring with 16 touchdowns in his junior campaign.
Wefle’s performances against Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday and Otterbein on Friday earned her the second OAC Player of the Week selection of her senior season.
Welfle helped guide the Berg to a 3-1 and a 3-2 win over Baldwin Wallace and Otterbein respectively. Welfle collected 18 digs and a team-high 23 kills against the Yellow Jackets followed by a six dig, team-high 17 kill performance on Friday night.
Welfle leads the Berg offense with 356 kills through 26 matches and 101 sets played. Amber also leads the team in service aces with 38 and has tallied 22 assists and 68 total blocks.
