TIFFIN, Ohio—Heidelberg University senior offensive tackle Derrick Arbogast (Tiffin/Calvert) and junior linebacker Craig Sykes (Centerburg) were named to the Capital One Academic All-District VII first team, announced yesterday by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Arbogast, an Academic All-District selection a year ago, is an education major who carries a 3.91 grade-point-average. This season, he has anchored an offensive line that has paved the way for 4,148 yards of total offense (460.9 yards per game), which is 450 yards off the single-season team record set in 2010. In addition, the offense has allowed just eight sacks. Arbogast, an honorable mention All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC selection last season, has started 29 of the last 30 games. Arbogast is also a leader in several faith-based campus organizations.
Sykes is a biology/Spanish double major who carries a 3.88 GPA. He leads the Student Prince defense and is tied for fifth in the OAC with 83 tackles, including 50 solo stops, nine tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks, and is tied for third in the league with four interceptions. Sykes has also notched two quarterback hurries and two pass break-ups and has forced and recovered one fumble.
With their first-team Academic All-District VII selections, both Arbogast and Sykes are automatically nominated for the Capital One Academic All-America team. To be nominated for the Academic All-District team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore and have earned a 3.30 cumulative GPA.
