Heidelberg Baseball Places Three On All-Region Team

Sophomores Jeremy Wentworth (Johnstown, Ohio / St. Charles) and David Paddock (Westerville, Ohio / North) and senior Alex Rutter (Bowling Green, Ohio / Bowling Green) of the Heidelberg College baseball team were selected to the 2007 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Mideast Region Team. Wentworth and Paddock earned a spot on the second team, while Rutter garnered third team accolades.

In 2007 Heidelberg, under the guidance of eighth-year head coach Matt Palm, finished the year with a 28-15 overall record and a 13-5 mark in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Berg won the program’s second OAC Regular Season Championship and earned the right to host the OAC Tournament. Overall Heidelberg made its eighth postseason appearance and fifth consecutive.

In center field, Wentworth anchored the outfield in all 43 contests on the year and posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 98 chances. At the plate Wentworth was equally impressive leading the team in batting average (.423), hits (69) runs scored (48), doubles (10) and on base percentage (.500). Wentworth also shared team honors with 14 stolen bases, while ranking second on the team with 38 RBI. Wentworth also earned a spot on the All-OAC First Team in 2007.

Paddock, a left-handed pitcher, led the Heidelberg pitching staff in 2007 with an overall record of 7-4 and a 2.96 earned run average. The two-time All-OAC pitcher pitched 73.0 innings, striking out 48 batters, while giving up just 78 hits. For his season, Paddock started 11 games, pitching six complete games.

Saving his best season for last was Rutter. A first baseman, Rutter was tabbed the OAC Hitter of the Week for the week of April 30, 2007 and earned a spot on the All-OAC First Team in 2007. Rutter led the team with 319 putouts on the year and went on to post a .986 field percentage in 349 chances. Rutter led the team with a single-season tying mark of four triples, to go along with a team-high 44 RBI, while standing second in hits with 59 and five home runs. He also finished third on the team with 33 runs scored.
