’Berg Picks Up at Win First Time Out
A win is a perfect way to open a season. The Heidelberg College baseball team, led by head coach Matt Palm, defeated Misericordia University 17-4 in just seven innings of play for an exciting beginning to its 2008 campaign at the Port Charlotte Invitational in Florida.
The Berg opened up its lead with an eight-run second inning. They scored again in the third, five more times in the fourth, and four more time in the seventh. Everett Thomas (Evansville, Ind. / Harrison) earned the win for the Student Princes after pitching 5 2/3 innings, allowing only four earned runs, and striking out four as well. Freshman reliever Andy Lowe (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Carroll) made his first appearance on the mound wearing the red, orange, and black. He finished the game by pitching 1 1/3 innings, striking out one, and not allowing any runs.
Leading the team was catcher Steve Decker (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield) who went 3-for-4 at the plate, hitting three doubles, and driving in four RBIs. Gar Keen (Fredericktown, Ohio / Highland) went 3-for-5 with one stolen base and one RBI, followed by Matt Grassley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / North) who went 3-for-4 also with a triple, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Also placing runs on the board for the Berg was Derek Andrzejczak (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview). He went 2-for-5 with four RBIs and a double.
Heidelberg continues on in the tournament on Sunday, March 9, at 10 a.m. against Anderson in a doubleheader.
