Heidelberg Continues Hot Streak with 21-5 Win Over Olivet

The Heidelberg College baseball team had 13 players connect for a hit en route to a 21-5 win over Olivet College at the 2008 Port Charlotte Invitational in Port Charlotte, Fla. The Berg finished the contest with 16 hits, while the freshmen trio of Brian Koehl (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview), Blake Thornton (Olivet, Mich. / Olivet) and Andy Lowe (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Carroll) combined to give up just eight hits to Olivet. The victory is the second-straight for Heidelberg who stands at 4-1 on the season. In its five games on the year, Heidelberg has outscored its opponents 58-21, including 38-10 in its last two outings.

Heidelberg scored at least one run in seven different innings, including six runs in the fifth and eighth innings. The Comets scored a run in the first, two more in the third, one in the seventh and one in the eighth.

Koehl made his first collegiate start and threw 6.0 innings to pick up the win. He gave up five hits and three earned runs, while striking out five. Thornton pitched 2.0 innings in relief and allowed just two hits, two runs; one earned and struck out one. Lowe closed out the game, pitching the final inning and allowed just one hit.

At the plate, L.B. Emrhein (Seven Hills, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) went 2-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. Also picking up two hits in the win was Jeremy Wentworth (Johnstown, Ohio / St. Charles) and Matt Grassley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North). Wentworth knocked a triple, while scoring three times and hit in two runs, while Grassley scored three runs.

Freshmen Cody Kaglic (Springfield, Ohio / Kenton Ridge) and Andrew Buelow (Marysville, Mich. / Marysville) helped Heidelberg rack up six runs in the eighth inning. Kaglic was the second batter of the inning and hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot, and four batters later, with the bases loaded, Buelow hit a bases-clearing double. Fellow classmate, Gar Keen (Fredericktown, Ohio / Highland) finished the game off with three RBI. Two came from a two-run double in the fifth.

Heidelberg continues its trek through the invitational against nationally-ranked Wooster on Thursday. First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m. at the North County Regional Park in Port Charlotte, Fla.
