Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader with Loras

The Heidelberg College baseball team swept a doubleheader with Loras College (Iowa) today at the Port Charlotte Invitational in Port Charlotte, Fla. The Berg won game one 22-1 and returned in game two to post a 5-3 victory. The sweep improves Heidelberg to 7-2 on the year, while Loras falls to 3-3 overall.

In game one, Heidelberg scored in every inning, jumping out to a 10-0 lead after three innings of action. Loras plated its first run in the bottom of fourth after limiting Heidelberg to just one run in the top half of the inning. The Berg went on to score three more runs each in the fifth and sixth and closed out the contest with five runs in its last at bat.

For the game, Heidelberg picked up 20 hits, while junior left-handed pitcher David Paddock (Westerville, Ohio / North) kept the Loras hitters at bay, giving up just three hits. Paddock pitched a complete game to earn the win and racked up eight strike outs.

At the plate, Heidelberg was led by freshman Jason Lash (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) who went a perfect 5-for-5 with five runs scored and three RBI. Jeremy Wentworth (Johnstown, Ohio / St. Charles) finished with three hits, three RBI and four runs scored, while Tony Pawlowicz (Montpelier, Ohio / Montpelier) had two hits and knocked in three runs.

In game two Heidelberg trailed 3-2 after four innings. After a scoreless fifth on both sides of the scoreboard, Heidelberg plated three runs in the sixth for the win. With two on base, Lash knocked a two-run double to clear the bases, which sent the go-ahead run and the eventual game-winning run across home plate.

Picking up his second win of the season on the mound was senior Andrew McFarland (Mansfield, Ohio / Madison). He threw a complete game 7.0 innings, giving up six hits, while striking out eight batters.

Lash continued his dominance at the plate in game two, going 2-for-2 with two RBI, a run scored and a double. Also connecting for two hits was Steve Decker (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield), while Pawlowicz was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
