Heidelberg Baseball Wins Fourth-Straight

A two-run single by Jason Lash (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) in the fifth inning erased a 1-0 deficit for the Heidelberg College baseball team and eventually led to a 5-2 victory over Worcester State (Mass.) for the Berg at the Port Charlotte Invitational. The win is the fourth-straight for Heidelberg who improves to 8-2 on the year with one game remaining on its 2008 Florida slate. Heidelberg will face Allegheny College (Pa.) tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. before heading back to Tiffin and preparing for its Ohio Athletic Conference opener with Marietta College on Saturday, March 22.

Lash’s single in the fifth put Heidelberg on top 2-1 and he rounded the base paths to add another run in the inning to increase Heidelberg’s lead to 3-1. The Berg added two more insurance runs, one in each of the sixth and ninth innings, to bring the final score to 5-2.

Picking up his first collegiate victory was freshman Branden Stucky (Medina, Ohio / Medina). Stucky pitched 6.0 innings and gave up just five hits, while striking out six batters. Stucky gave up two runs, one earned. Senior Steve Calevro (Perrysburg, Ohio / Perrysburg) pitched the final three innings and picked up the save. Calevro allowed two hits and struck out two.

At the plate Jeremy Wentworth (Johnstown, Ohio / St. Charles) led the way with a 3-for-4 outing, including two runs scored and three stolen bases. Gar Keen (Fredericktown, Ohio / Highland) hit 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double, while Lash finished with a hit, a run scored and two RBI.
