Heidelberg Prevails in the Ninth at Ohio Wesleyan

For the second time in exactly one week, the Heidelberg College baseball team headed to Delaware, Ohio to take on Ohio Wesleyan University in a non-conference contest of Mideast region teams. And the trip down Route 23 produced the same result for Heidelberg, a victory. Heidelberg topped OWU 11-10 to improve to 14-4 on the year, while the Bishops fell to 11-10.

With the game tied 9-9 heading into the ninth inning, Heidelberg outscored OWU 2-1 to earn the victory. Jeremy Wentworth (Johnstown, Ohio / St. Charles) connected at the plate to score Andrew Buelow (Marysville, Ohio / Marysville) for an RBI, while Steve Decker (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield) rounded the bases to score on the throw, marking the game-winning run. Decker was hit by a pitch to earn a spot at first.

Ohio Wesleyan pulled within a run in its final at bat, and had the game-tying run on first with two outs, but Heidelberg pitcher Steve Calevro (Perrysburg, Ohio / Perrysburg) forced a fly out to center field to end the game.

Heidelberg held a slim 16-14 advantage in hits for the contest, courtesy of five players with multiple hits. Leading the way with five hits was Wentworth followed by Jason Lash (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) with three. Rounding out those with multiple hits was Willie Brechun (Clinton, Ohio / Canton Central Catholic), Biagio Boytim (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) and Buelow with two apiece.

Knocking in two runs each was Wentworth, Brechun, Boytim and Lash, while Buelow scored a team-leading three times.

Pitching 4.0 innings in relief and picking up the win was Calevro. Calevro gave up five hits, while striking out three to improve to 2-0 on the year.

Heidelberg returns to action tomorrow at the University of Findlay. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
