'Berg Tops DII Findlay for Sixth-Straight Win
The Heidelberg College baseball team posted its sixth-consecutive victory today with a 9-6 win at Division II the University of Findlay. The win improved Heidelberg to 15-4 on the year, while Findlay falls to 10-11.
Heidelberg plated six runs in the second inning to take control early and never let up. Alex Monroe (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston), Tony Pawlowicz (Montpelier, Ohio / Montpelier) and Derek Andrzejczak (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) opened the second with three-straight singles to load the bases. Two batters later Ohio Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week Jason Lash (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) knocked in a run on a single to keep the bases loaded. Jeremy Wentworth (Johnstown, Ohio / St. Charles) followed Lash with a bases clearing double to put Heidelberg up 4-0. With two outs, Matt Grassley (Gross Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) and Matt Hille (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Homestead) had back-to-back RBI singles to close out the scoring for the inning.
The Berg extended its lead to 9-2 after six innings and Findlay posted four runs in the eighth to push the final score to 9-6.
Freshman Jake Gossman (Westerville, Ohio / South) earned the start on the mound and threw 6.1 innings to get the win. Gossman sits at 2-1 for the year. Against Findlay, he gave up five hits, two earned runs, while striking out nine. Senior Steve Calevro (Perrysburg, Ohio / Perrysburg) came in relief for the final two outs of the game and picked up his second save on the year. Calevro allowed no hits and gave up no runs, while striking out one.
Offensively, Heidelberg finished with 10 hits on the day. Leading the way with two hits apiece was Wentworth, Grassley and Pawlowicz. Wentworth and Grassley each knocked in three runs apiece, while combining to score four runs.
Heidelberg continues its three-game non-conference road trip at Wittenberg University tomorrow, April 3 beginning at 4:00 p.m.
