Baseball Reaches 30-Win Plateau
The Heidelberg College baseball team, ranked 20th by D3baseball.com and 24th by the American Baseball Coaches Association, topped visiting Wittenberg University 2-0 to pick up its 30th victory on the year. It is just the fourth time in program history that Heidelberg has reached the 30-win mark in a season. Heidelberg previously had won 32 contests in 2000, 2003 and 2004, all of which have came under the guidance of ninth-year head coach Matt Palm. For the year Heidelberg stands at 30-7, while Wittenberg falls to 19-19.
The pitching trio of Everett Thomas (Evansville, Ind. / Harrison), Jake Gossman (Westerville, Ohio / South) and Andy Lowe (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Carroll) combined to pitch Heidelberg’s fourth shut out on the year. Thomas got the start and went 6.1 innings. He gave up six hits, while striking out one to improve to 6-1 on the year. Gossman got the call out of the bullpen for 1.2 innings of relief work. He entered the game with two runners on and one out. He forced his first batter to ground into a double play to end the inning. Lowe threw the final inning and gave up one hit and struck out one to pick up his fifth save on the year.
Heidelberg scored a run in its first at bat on an RBI single from Jason Lash (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) and added its second run in the seventh off an RBI single from Biagio Boytim (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick).
In the end, Heidelberg had seven different players record a hit including Andrew Buelow (Marysville, Ohio / Marysville), Gar Keen (Fredericktown, Ohio / Highland), Lash, Matt Grassley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North), Boytim, Steve Decker (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield) and Willie Brechun (Clinton, Ohio / Canton Central Catholic). Wentworth and Lash scored Heidelberg’s two runs on the day.
Heidelberg returns to action tomorrow at Adrian College. The nine-inning contest is slated to begin at 3:00p.m.
