'Berg Baseball Climbs in National Poll

The Heidelberg University baseball team, under the guidance of 10th-year head coach Matt Palm, continues to climb in the national poll released by D3baseball.com. In the latest rankings announced today, March 17, the Berg stands third in the nation. The no. 3 position is the best in the history of the program, and improves on its ranking of sixth a week ago.

Heidelberg currently boasts an overall record of 10-2 and is coming off a trip at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. and a two-game stint at Piedmont College. While at the classic, Heidelberg spilt a doubleheader with fellow ranked foe the College of Wooster and swept the series with Piedmont, a team that is receiving votes this week.

Joining the Berg in the national poll is fellow Ohio Athletic Conference member Marietta College, who is ranked 18th. Heidelberg will entertain the Pioneers of Marietta this Saturday at Peaceful Valley, the home of ’Berg baseball. It will be a rematch of last years OAC Tournament Championship. Heidelberg beat the Pioneers twice on championship day to earn a berth in the Mideast Regional.

Looking ahead on the 2009 slate for the Berg is a contest with Wooster, which will also be played at Peaceful Valley. As mentioned earlier the two teams split a doubleheader in Florida, but a season ago, Heidelberg topped the Scots in two of three games, including a 1-0 win in the bottom of the ninth to send Heidelberg to the regional championship game.

Prior to its showdown with Marietta, the Berg will travel to Bluffton University today (March 17) and head to Ohio Wesleyan University (March 18) tomorrow for non conference action.
