'Berg Represented in GLSCL

Three members of the Heidelberg University baseball team took part in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League in 2009. Junior closer Andy Lowe (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Carroll) was a member of the Grand Lake Mariners, while junior pitcher Brian Koehl (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) and sophomore infielder Ricky Lizcano (Toledo, Ohio / Roy C. Start) played with the Lake Erie Monarchs.

Lowe, a 2009 All-American for the Berg, served as a closer for the Mariners who finished the year at 25-10 overall and were runner-up in the league standings. In 12 appearances, Lowe posted a 0.00 earned run average, giving up just three hits, while striking out 11. Lowe’s opponents batted just .065. As a staff, Grand Lake stood atop the league in ERA (2.51), saves (12) and hits allowed (258). For his efforts, Lowe earned a spot on the All-GLSCL Second Team.

The Monarch’s closed out the summer with an overall record of 12-24. A 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference honoree, Koehl led the Monarch’s pitching staff with a 3.51 ERA. He ranked second on the team with seven appearances, while posting a 3-3 overall record. In 33.1 innings of work, Koehl struck out 13 batters and held his opponent’s to a .277 batting average, which stood first on the staff.

Lizcano played in two games and picked up a hit. He joined nine of his teammates at the under-20 AAABA World Series in Johnstown, Pa. at the beginning of August. Lizcano was on of a limited number of players in the league that were coming off just one season of collegiate play.
