Anthony Gholson

Head Coach
(419) 448-2006
agholson@heidelberg.edu

In his second year at the reigns of the Heidelberg men’s basketball team is Anthony Gholson. Gholson finished the 2008-09 season with an overall 8-18 and 5-13 record in the Ohio Athletic Conference.  Leading the Berg to its 48th appearance in the OAC Tournament, Gholson coached two All-OAC and two Academic All-OAC honorees.

Gholson was previously an assistant at Ohio Northern for the past four years, and during his tenure as head coach at Columbus State Community College (2000-04), he led the Cougars to an 86-36 record (.704 winning percentage). In his last season at Columbus State, his team was ranked No. 1 in the nation in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II with a 29-2 record. That same year, they won the Ohio Community Athletic Conference Championship.

During his playing days at Ohio Northern, Gholson, a two-year letter winner, was a member of the National Tournament team in 1988. He was a member of the coaching staff when the Polar Bears won the national championship in 1993.

Heidelberg Athletic Director Matt Palm said Gholson’s experience as a player and a coach as well as a teacher and administrator made him the ideal candidate to take over a program that has been surging upward the past few seasons. “We feel he is the right person to continue the momentum this program has built over the last few years,” Palm said.

At Heidelberg, Gholson inherits a program that is coming off one of its best seasons ever. The Student Princes won the OAC tournament on the heels of a 23-win season, the second most in the program’s history. The 20-5 regular season record tied for the best all-time mark. A trip to the NCAA Division III National Tournament ended in the first round for the Student Princes.

Michael Hunter Jr.

Assistant Coach

Coming into his first year as a graduate assistant coach for the Heidelberg’s men’s basketball team is Michael Hunter Jr.  Hunter looks to bring his skills and expertise he gained during his time with Ohio Northern University’s men’s basketball program. One of his main focuses will be the post position.

Hunter played for Ohio Northern University’s men’s basketball team from 2005-2007 and started every game his junior and senior year. In both his senior and junior year at ONU, he was at least second on the team in total rebounds and blocks. After finishing 21-6 overall with a second place finish in the Ohio Athletic Conference during Hunter’s junior year, ONU went 19-6 for the season which was good for a third place tie in the OAC in his senior campaign.

After his playing career, Hunter became the men’s basketball manager where he was responsible for overseeing practices and being the point of contact for the team’s travel plans. A year later, he was promoted to student assistant with ONU’s men’s basketball team where he worked with post players and was delegated for away games duties.

Hunter is native of Columbus, Ohio and attended Whetstone High School where he earned all-conference and all-district honors on Whetstone’s basketball team.

From ONU, Hunter earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management with an option of coaching certification. He is currently pursuing his master’s in education at Heidelberg.
