'Berg Men's Basketball Falls to Wilmington, 76-59 in Coaches vs. Cancer Game

The Heidelberg University men’s basketball team returned to Seiberling Gymnasium for the Coaches vs. Cancer game against the Quakers of Wilmington College.

Both teams entered the game at 9-9 overall, but Wilmington carried the advantage in the Ohio Athletic Conference entering the game with a 6-5 record compared to the Berg’s OAC record of 4-7.

Riding a three game slide, the Student Princes looked to rebound and get back into the win column. At the half, the Berg led by three and looked to be heading toward a close victory. But the Quakers roared back in the second half, outscoring the Student Princes, 43-22, and cruising to a 76-59 victory.

Senior Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) collected his 18th career double-double scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 total rebounds. Davis also recorded three assists, three steals and one block in the loss.

Davis is now ten points away from the 1,000-career point plateau.

Senior Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, PA./Harvest Prep) and freshman Jackson Blue (West Chester/Lakota West) both tallied eight points for the Berg against Wilmington.

Givner also collected three assists, three rebounds and two steals while Blue tallied six total rebounds and two steals in the loss.

With his eight points, Givner moves into ninth overall in career points with 1,300. He surpassed 1990 graduate Bill Dufur’s 1,293 career points.

Junior Keith Mackie (Detroit, MI./Fr. Gabriel Richard) led the Berg off of the bench with six points and one rebound.

The Quakers were led by Malcolm Hear II who collected a double-double with a game-high 23 points and ten rebounds.

The Heidelberg men’s basketball team and fifth year head coach Anthony Gholson will look to rebound from their loss when they return to the court on Wednesday, January 30, 2013. The Berg will play the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio at 7:30 p.m. The game will be shown on SportsTime Ohio when it airs on tape-delay at 11:00 p.m. later that evening.
