The Heidelberg University men’s basketball team opened their 2012-2013 schedule by hosting the ‘Berg Alumni Classic, featuring Trine University, the University of Akron-Wayne and the University of Miami-Middletown. The Berg battled Trine University, who defeated the Berg last year 86-76 in Seiberling Gymnasium. However, the Berg learned from their loss and took down the Thunder, 80-77.
Senior Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) led the Student Princes with 23 points by shooting 83% from the field. Davis was also active on the boards with five offensive rebounds accompanied by five defensive rebounds.
Senior Dane Givner (Canal Winchester/Harvest Prep.) was a perfect two for two from three-point range on his way to 17 points. Givner also collected two steals and two assists against the Thunder.
Ishaam Smith Jr. (Richmond Heights) and Jackson Blue (West Chester/Lakota West) showed well for the Berg in their first outing. The freshmen duo tallied 14 points with two rebounds and four points with three defensive rebounds respectively.
As a team, Heidelberg shot over 50% form the field finishing their matchup against Trine shooting 51.6%.
With the thrilling victory the Heidelberg men will play the University of Miami-Middletown tomorrow evening at 4:00 p.m. The University of Miami-Middletown defeated the University of Akron-Wayne by a score of 110-86 in the first contest of the evening to earn a spot in the winner’s matchup.
