Fifth year head coach Anthony Gholson led his 4-1 Heidelberg University men’s basketball team against, 2-2 Ohio Athletic Conference foe John Carroll University, to begin OAC competition.
In Seiberling Gymnasium, the Student Princes played brilliantly in the first half and took a two-point lead into the locker room. However, the Blue Streaks came out in the second half and outscored the Berg, 47-38 on their way to a 83-77 victory.
Senior Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) recorded his first double-double of the 2012-13 season, dropping 17-points and collecting 10 rebounds. Davis, who played the entire second half for the Student Princes, also tallied two assists, two blocks and three steals against the Blue Streaks.
Senior Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, PA./Harvest Prep.) accounted for 15 of the Berg’s total points against John Carroll. Givner also tallied four rebounds and led the Berg with five assists, while shooting three of five from beyond the arch.
Freshman Cody Blizzard (Ashtabula/Lakeside) tied a season-high with 12-points against the Blue Streaks, shooting five of seven from the field and two of two from the charity stripe.
Kyle Hubbard, who accounted for 23 points, led John Carroll in the win. Hubbard shot a perfect nine of nine from the free throw line and tallied six blocks for the Blue Streaks.
As a team, the Berg outshot the Blue Streaks 45.6% to 43.6% from the floor.
With the loss, Gholson’s squad moves to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the OAC.
The Heidelberg men will return to the court on Wednesday, December 5, when they finish their three-game home stand against Capital University. Tip-off between the Student Princes and the Crusaders is slated for 7:30 p.m. from Seiberling Gymnasium.
